I wanted to make a challenge similar to the #30DRYC but for women. Zainab Fasiki has a book @hshouma where she illustrates women and mens bodies openly, without shame or judgement. Outside of the book she often drew herself naked as her superhero costume of choice. I thought, I'm not at that level of consciousness; most people aren't at a level to publicly display themselves in their most vulnerable form.
Outside of consciousness of the self, there are also very real, tangible repercussions for existing as who you are; from driving while black, to attending school with natural hair styles, to being trans and going, literally anywhere. The women in the photo have been jailed, interrogated, exiled, beaten... for speaking their truth. As a young-cis-educated-multilingual-american black woman I thought, what do I have to lose? I'm in a position where my truth cant hurt me thaaaaat bad, right?? I'm just tryna live in peace, and I will actively put in that work, even if it makes me and others uneasy.
I'm creating this challenge so feel free to steal this calendar, share what you're comfortable with sharing, and use the hashtag. ... I've never done anything artsy in my life; leading by example is the way to go. My professor asked the question "qui va commencer" (who's going to start) and the answer is "me."
I want to add that many issues that women/girls face are derived from a learned mentality that men have towards women, that boys have towards girls. It is that they are not two brands of the same product, two sides of the same coin; but all genders of people are people, we are human beings. We have sexualities and attractions naturally, many times towards each other. The mentality that needs to change is that female bodies have sexual organs and therefore are inherently sexual entities. Socialization (parents, friends, TV, music, religion, literature, etc.) forces women/girls to perform these scripts, men/boys too. Let's scratch all this and live in peace 💕
